Legacy Club
A legacy is the term used to describe a gift in a will.
Considering how important it is to take care of one's loved ones
and how vital gifts in wills are to charities, it is perhaps
surprising that only three out of ten people in the United
Kingdom make a will. ScotsCare has recently launched its own
Legacies Club. Leaving a legacy will support the Scots in London
who follow us. However much you decide to give, you can rest
assured that the charity will not have to pay any Inheritance Tax
on the donation. Depending on the amount you decide to leave,
your money can be used for, among other things;
• A school uniform for a child from a family on low income
• A regular, monthly payment for someone in receipt of a
state pension
• A re-training grant to get someone back into employment
• Building affordable housing in London
Including your wishes in your will is straightforward. If you
already have a will, all you need to do is add a codicil. If you have
not written a will yet, a solicitor will help you do this.

Take to the streets to support our Scots in London
Would you like to raise money for ScotsCare or its sister charity, Borderline whilst getting some fresh air, exercise and enjoying a great day out?! We certainly hope so as we are looking for enthusiastic individuals
and groups to take part in this year’s Walk for Scotland, on the 7th of June and the British 10k London Run on the 12th of July. There are 3 walks being held in Edinburgh over 12 miles, 6 miles and then a Royal Mile walk for the elderly and very young. All of the walks take in the beautiful scenery of Edinburgh so what better way to get a bit of exercise and raise some much needed money for ScotsCare and Borderline and the Scots they
support. To get involved, visit www.walkforscotland.com and follow the instructions to book a place.
If you want to try something a bit more intensive, we are also looking for willing supporters to take part in the London 10k run. The route takes in some of London’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Over 26,000 people took part last year so why not ensure a good Scottish contingent is on hand to run and raise money for charity. Visit www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk for further details on how to book a place. For further details on both events or a fundraising pack including sponsorship forms, email ross@scotscare.com or call 0800 652 2989.
We rely on the enthusiasm, support and commitment of our supporters in raising valuable funds which go directly towards supporting Scots in London so get your walking/running shoes on.
Feis London
A Feis is a traditional Gaelic festival. Feis London runs a weekly Scottish music session every Monday evening at Kentish Town Congregational Church from 7.30 to 10.00 pm. All instruments and levels of playing are accepted and encouraged so if you’d like to improve your skills, meet like-minded musicians, play some wonderful music and have a great time, you know where to go. For further information, contact either Donald Stewart or Etienne Duval on, feislondon@blueyonder.co.uk or 0208 340 9845.
We will keep you posted on up-coming events from London Feis, RSCDS, Gay Gordons, Ceilidh Club and other Scottish organisations so keep picking up your copy of ScotsCare Shout and visiting our website www.scotscare.com so you don’t miss out.
Staff Profile
The ScotsCare Shout interview has had a bit of an overhaul with some new (hopefully more interesting) questions for our somewhat willing interviewees. We needed a guinea pig to test this new format and so we thought, go straight to the top. So, Willie Docherty, our Chief Executive volunteered to open his heart on paella, Scottish weather, hip‐hop and much more.
SS: What do you do at ScotsCare and how long have you
worked here?
WD: Chief Executive Officer, 7-years.
SS: What is your connection to Scotland?
WD: Fortunate to be born and bred there.
SS: What is your connection to London?
WD: Work only.
SS: What Scottish person or persons do you admire most?
WD: Hugh and William McIlvanney. From humble beginnings,
they have both gone on to become brilliant writers.
Hugh is widely recognised as Britain’s finest sports
journalist and William one of Scotland’s most loved authors.
SS: What age are you (you don’t have to tell us!!!)?
WD: 55 but probably 56 by the time you read this.
SS: What surprising things are you good at?
WD: Original thought.
SS: What do you consider Scotland’s greatest contribution
to the world? You can’t say yourself!
WD: How no? Its people.
SS: Where are your favourite places in Scotland and London?
WD: Glasgow especially on a cold, damp, rain sodden day,
and the West End of London.
SS: What is your greatest ambition or achievement?
WD: I left school when I was 15, without so much as a
leaving certificate, so having gone to University would
be my greatest achievement.
SS: Tell us about something you like to do other than your
work for ScotsCare?
WD: Run, read and listen to music of all kinds from hip hop
to the classics and everything in between.
SS: What would your last meal be?
WD: Paella.
SS: What do you like most about Scottish culture or people?
WD: The wee Scottish ‘wuman’ I came across the last time
I was in Glasgow, she was about 75 years old and
4ft 2inchs tall and she asked the assistant in a bakers
shop, ‘haw hen, are ye serving here or no’.
Turning to me she said “young yins noo adays son,
heids foo o noansense” She got served immediately.
SS: What do you enjoy most about working for ScotsCare?
WD: Helping make it possible to help other Scots.
SS: Finally, tell us anything else you would like to,
about yourself?
WD: I might be a Chief Executive but I was brought up on a
housing scheme and I don’t forget that.
Email ross@scotscare.com if there’s a question you feel we
just have to have in here and we may include it.
Keep it clean though.
Competition
We think everyone probably needs a bit of cheering up after this year’s 6 Nations so here’s a rugby related competition. For your chance to win a signed London Scottish rugby shirt, answer the following question correctly:
Which Scot (pictured), will coach the British and Irish Lions side on their
South African tour this year?
• Frank Hadden • Ian McGeechan • Gavin Hastings
For your chance to win, email ross@scotscare.com with your answer.
